Today students created their own Hanging Gardens of Babylon!  If you get the chance, ask your student why the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were created long ago!

Halloween

Halloween information: The Halloween parade starts at 2:15pm. Students may not come to school in their costumes. They will be allowed to change into their costumes after lunch. Parents are invited to come to school anytime after 1:00pm to help their students get dressed. Please leave enough time to help your students change before the parade. Students cannot have any type of weapons. If your child does not celebrate Halloween, they still need to come to school on October 31st. We will be participating in academics prior to lunch and while preparing for the parade. On Halloween there will be no drive thru pick up. Students will be picked up in their classroom.

Here are some updates:

1.  Today a Scholastic order form went home with a letter from me with directions about how to place an order.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask :)  Scholastic orders are due on Friday, October 24th.  If you send in an order after Friday, I will not place it until the next time I submit a Scholastic order.

2.  Our Smencil fundraiser began today!  The cost of one smencil is $1.25 and five smencils cost $5.00.  If you send money to school with your student I will help them complete the order form.

3.  Two stories went home today.  Your student should have "Gran's Trips" and "The Pet" in their red folder.  Please read these stories at home with your student.  We have read them in class twice, so your child should be familiar with them.  They are a great review of the sounds, spellings, and tricky words they have learned thus far.

Have a great week!

Skills Strand Unit 1 Workbook

Today I sent home the Unit 1 Skills Strand Workbook.  While we completed most of the pages at school, there are some extra practice pages at the end of the workbook that were not completed.  There are also additional stories from Snap Shots, our first reader at the end of the workbook.  These stories focus on the taught sounds, spellings, and tricky words.  Please take a look at the workbook with your student, as it is a great resource for extra language arts practice at home.

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend!  When your students come back to school on Thursday, we will continue with our subtraction chapter in math.  Please continue to review subtraction facts within 10 with your students.  Our Listening and Learning Domain is "Different Lands, Similar Stories".  Students are listening to different versions of popular fairy tales told around the world.  In Skills Strand we are continuing to read our readers.  Please remember to do the 'take home' activities that go home with your students, as they review the sounds, spellings, and stories read aloud in class.  In Science we are beginning our Matter unit!  You can review matter with your students by asking them what objects are solids, liquids, and gasses!  See you on Thursday!

Thank you for coming to Back to School Night last Thursday! I enjoyed having the opportunity to share my classroom procedures and some of the many things your students will be learning this year. This week we will begin learning about the human body! In math we are studying number bonds which will help us as we begin practicing addition facts to 10. We are wrapping up our oceans and geography units this week!

Please remember to read every single night!!

Thank you for checking in!  The first two weeks of First Grade have been very exciting!

On Thursday, September 4th, we will have Back to School Night from 5:00pm - 6:00pm.  I am looking forward to sharing my classroom policies and giving you an idea of what your student will be learning this year.  Carrusel Uniform Company will be at school on Thursday, September 4th between 2:00pm and 5:00pm to sell uniforms before Back to School Night begins.

I'm looking forward to a great school year!
