Today is the first day of the Read-A-Thon!  Please help your students log their reading on their purple reading log, which I've attached to their homework folder.  During the Read-A-Thon, I will be attaching extra reading passages to the homework packets.  Please refer to the information packet that was sent home last week for more information about dress-up days, prizes, library cards, and Six-Flags Magic Mountain tickets.
This week we learned about Moctezuma the Second, emperor of the Aztec people.  He wore a headdress made of gold.  Students made their own headdresses today.
Check out our Modigliani inspired portraits!  Amedeo Modigliani is known for using elongated faces and necks in his portraits.
We learned about the importance of astronomy in the Maya civilization.  Students imprinted suns onto colorful foil paper.  Please stop by and check out our art!
This week we talked about color, one of the elements of art. Students created their own color wheels. We discussed primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, and cool colors. We also looked at famous paintings and discussed how artists use color to express emotion in their work.
Elee Bordokas, children's book author and illustrator, came to the classroom today and read her book to the students.  She shared her book with them and answered questions about what it is like to be an author and illustrator.  I'm attaching links to the books in case you are interested!

We had a very busy day in First Grade!  We learned about the mummification process while pretending to mummify a student.  Ms. G taught us about Diwali, which is celebrated today.  We also practiced for our very first spelling test that will take place on Friday.
Today, students created their own Hanging Gardens of Babylon! If you get the chance, ask your student why the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were created long ago.
Students learned that the Mesopotamians wrote using symbols.  This type of writing is called cuneiform.  Students wrote in cuneiform on clay tablets today!
